News University
For anyone interested in taking a quick crash course or two to supplement this program, you might try News University. It's a Poynter Institute for Media Studies project, funded by the Knight Foundation, that offers interactive courses for journalists. You have to register for the site, but most of the courses are free and can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
Here are a few good classes:
- Anatomy of a Newspaper: explores every department of the newspaper, plus gets you acquainted with newsroom vocabulary
- Get Me Rewrite: tips on how to improve your writing and rework awkward phrases
- Color in News Design: how color complements the written word
- Math for Journalists: extremely useful
- Handling Race & Ethnicity: how to deal with race and ethnic descriptions in stories
- Freedom of Information: how to use FOI laws
- Language of the Image: how to tell a story with images
-Janey Adams

Thanks Janey! If I had known about these classes before enrolling at AU I could have saved a lot of scratch! (and slept in on Saturdays...)

Thank you so much, Janey! This has been sorely needed! Especially the online course!
